Ballistics Lab

July 9, 2013

In the Ballistics Lab, we learned about bird gelatin used for impact experiments. The gelatin is filled with balloons to replicate the density of a bird in order to test the potential damage that could be caused by an impact. We were told that in Texas there is an open field lab which conducts testing by shooting chickens. Various videos about foam impact collisions were displayed. Foam impacts are of interest because of the damage caused by foam on the Space Shuttle. Many projectile objects are marked with dots in order to track the way in which the objects rupture. The interns ended the tour with a video of the Hulk being hit by a projectile.
