The Aeronautics Academy was invited to tour NASA Glenn’s supersonic wind tunnel. The wind tunnel’s test section is 10 feet by 10 feet by 40 feet and can be lowered in order to be loaded for large test pieces. The interns were able to step inside the wind tunnel and take pictures. They learned about the various projects that the wind tunnel helped contribute to. It requires a lot of power and therefore it is important to collaborate with the electric companies and run the tunnel on the third shift late at night. The longest the tunnel had ever been on continuously was 6 hours. The tunnel has an “adjustable” nozzle which can be shaped to the needs of the experiments. The interns were also shown the control room where experiments are controlled and data is collected.
