Week 5

Monday, July 2, 2012

It was a jet lagged day after getting back from California. Most of us had not gotten much sleep, and hence were really tired. Everyone continued to work hard at work in preparation of the Midterm presentations that were to take place the next day. Melanie finally got her computer delivered to her desk, so she could now work like the other interns with regular access to a computer.

Reed and Daniel Kakaley had to take a break from their diligent work that day and go pick up the sandwiches for Dr. George Schmidt’s presentation to the entire group that was to take place during lunch time that day. It was a tiring ride to Subway, but the platters were picked up successfully. Reed and Daniel K. then headed to the nearest convenience store to pick up water. On the way, they encountered some shirtless, tattooed guy in the middle of the road. After Reed carefully avoided him in the intersection, they guy decided to come tell Reed and Daniel Kakaley… something. They ignored him, and then told each other that they would put this in the weekly summaries.

The meeting with Dr. Schmidt went well. The group listened very carefully. After that, everyone put the finishing touches on the midterm presentations for the next day. Some students also presented dry runs to their mentors.

As any normal morning, the Academies left Homestead Suites and arrived at NASA well prepared for their long and drawn out day. Most of the Academites realized that the whole day consisted of the required midterm presentations. The midterm presentations were located in the Conference Room 131 in Building 49. Eventually, the majority of the Academy interns congregated into the Conference Room around 8:30 am and sat in the surrounding chairs. By the time presentations were over, the day at NASA had come to an end. All NASA employees were allowed to leave at 2 pm that day if they wished, due to the 4th of July Holiday the next day. Some Academy interns decided to do so after getting permission from their mentors.

Wednesday, July 4, 2012

Being the Independence Day of the United States of America, July 4th was a government Holiday. It was great, and everyone finally got some sleep. Several people decided to go see fireworks at Edgewater Park and also go to an Indians game.

Thursday, July 5, 2012

This was not eventful day in any manner, and the work at NASA Glenn was conducted as normal. Later during the day, the interns had the hope to relax in their rooms for the remaining time in the day. However, there was a speaker for the rest of the evening at a restaurant called Manhattan Deli reserved by Daniel ReMine and Taichi Murata. The speaker, Dennis Huff, was introduced by Daniel ReMine and Taichi Murata to the group. The topic Mr. Huff presented was interesting to the interns. He explored the potential technologies for future aircraft propulsion and the timeframe the technologies could be implemented into military and commercial applications. It went well. The food was good. Reed didn’t give Dan any of his burger and, instead, gave it to Steve.

Friday, July 6, 2012

Nothing of note happened except the usual 8 to 4:30 work day at Glenn. Everyone was glad it was Friday.

Saturday, July 7, 2012

In a sense, the Aeronautics Academy RAs stayed locally unlike the Space Academy RAs and enjoyed their free weekend. Saturday was not exciting because of the unbearable heat bestowed upon every living entity. Therefore, this day involved people dodging the sun and pursuing their own form of entertainment.

Harkirat decided this would be a very good day to go for a long run, not really realizing that it was 96 degrees F outside. She was craving the double fudge chocolate cake at Aladdin’s Eatery. The closest Aladdin’s Eater & Bakery was about 4.8 miles away. So Harkirat successfully ran the distance and treated herself with a gyro, a smoothie and the double fudge chocolate cake at Westlake. On her way back, she was able to hop on a bus for about 2 miles but had to walk the rest of the distance back home.

Taichi and Dan went to the Farmer’s market. It was excellent. However, it was really hot so walking there and back was a challenge.

Heath, Steve, and Dan decided to catch Spiderman in theatres. It was pretty good. The drive over there was not fun though. Dan commented that he has doubts for the future generation because of the previews that the children next to him liked.

Sunday, July 8, 2012

Most people spent Sunday in their rooms or taking care of errands and working on the upcoming deadlines and presentations. Daniel Kakaley
